Do you have a list of all the keywords and phrases you would like your website to appear under on Google? If you’re not sure where to put them on your website or they aren’t working for you, keep reading…
Google doesn’t use keywords for their search engine listings
This may come as a shock but currently Google doesn’t take any notice of your list of meta keywords when indexing your website.
Here’s what Google has to say… “Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don’t have any effect in our search ranking at present.” Read more on the Google Webmaster Blog…
What they do use is page titles and page content. This can include meta titles and meta descriptions if you have them.
How Do I Get Listed Under My Keywords?
It’s bit like losing weight – there is no easy way.
- You need to add a separate page or post to your website focusing on each one of your keywords or phrases. The keywords should appear in your page/post title and also in your content (especially the first paragraph). If you are using meta titles and descriptions, make sure the keyword or phrase is in these too.
- Use your keyword list as your blogging planner and write a blog post every week with one of those key phrases in the title and in the content. If you don’t know what to write or how to start, have someone in your company (or a copywriting expert like Emma Jelsma) who is a confident writer or typist ask you a question relating to the keyword/key phrase and turn the answer into the content of your post.
- You could also start by changing your services pages and products pages from a one page lists into one page per service/product with the accompanying key phrases.
- If you don’t have a website yet, think about planning your website navigation and page structure around your most important keywords
TIP: Write your own content, don’t copy and paste what someone else has written. Google penalizes you for duplicate content – exact content found elsewhere on the web. Plus you know your business better than anyone else so whether you write it yourself or not, you do know what to write.
In Summary
Start writing/typing following the guidelines above and get your keywords incorporated into your website in a way that Google will use and you are publishing fresh content so Google will crawl your website more often. You might want to submit a sitemap to Google too to make sure they pick up on all your new content quickly.
